Opening Night!

I am so excited for the first night of WNBA, even if there is only 2 games on the slate today. I’d like to plug my introduction to DFS here, as well as the Dallas, Atlanta, Indiana, and New York team previews. As well, it is always important to keep an eye on starting lineups, especially this early in the year. Let’s get into the first slate of the year!

Dallas Wings @ Atlanta Dream

This game should be very fast-paced. The Dream were one of the higher paced teams last season, and are looking to run again this year. In the beginning of the year, it will be the Tiffany Hayes and Brittney Sykes Show. Sykes comes in at a value ($5600 on DK, $5400 on FD), and should be around taking ten shots in this game. Those shots, combined with above average peripherals (rebounds, assists, steals, blocks), should put her in a good position to score over 25 fantasy points. Hayes, on the other hand, is more expensive ($9.1k, 6.6k), but should be the first option as Angel McCoughtry is not in the lineup. She has a great shot at scoring over twenty real life points, and could easily score over 35 fantasy points.

Jessica Breland ($10.1k, 7.5k), seems overpriced for her production, as she scored just under 1 fantasy point per minute last season. Renee Montgomery (8.1k, 5.8k) and Elizabeth Williams (8.9k, 6.4k) could be in consideration, but seem slightly overpriced as well (especially on DraftKings).

Dallas provides a lot of value on this slate. The departure of Liz Cambage has left a huge hole, and many players are trying to fill that void, giving us fantasy value. Glory Johnson (7.6k, 6.3k) should play over thirty minutes, and should be able to produce over thirty fantasy points in those minutes. Likely starting point guard Allisha Gray (6.6k, 5.9k) should be playing thirty minutes, and should be taking more shots than last year, where she was deferring to Cambage and Diggins-Smith.

Kayla Thornton (5.2k, 5.6k) is the other returning starter from last year, and if last year is anything to go off of, this is a bargain price for her. Rookie Arike Ogunbowale took a ton of shots in preseason, and I’m banking on her paying off her salary of 6.4k and 5.7k very easily. There is some minutes uncertainty, as some coaches do not like playing rookies.

Indiana Fever @ New York Liberty

This game, less compelling at first glance, can be made interesting as we look to players ready to break out. Kelsey Mitchell (5.3k DK, 6.2k FD), had an extremely high usage rate last season, one that warrants a much higher price than this on both sites. She should be a great play today against the Liberty’s defense. Shenise Johnson (4.9k, 4.3k) could be a great value if she ends up in the starting lineup. Teaira McCowan is a much better value on FanDuel than DraftKings, as she comes in at a price of 8700 on DK and just 4700 on FD. Candice Dupree seems very overpriced at 10.4k on DK and 7.5k on FD after a season in which she put up 0.85 fantasy points per minute. There are other better avenues to spend up.

The Liberty star and this slate’s most productive player, Tina Charles, is coming up against one of the worst defenses from last season. Though 10.7k and 8.1k on DK and FD, respectively, constitutes a high price, I could easily see a 20-15 game from her. She will be flanked by Amanda Zahui B. (6.2k, 4.9k). If Zahui B receives enough minutes, she should be a tremendous value, grabbing many rebounds and even shooting threes. Though 4.9k on FD is more attractive, I would still be willing to pay 6.2k for her on DK, given that she starts.

Asia Durr (5.5k, 5.1k) is a rookie who should step into the starting lineup immediately and contribute. Though I am not certain of her role with the Liberty yet, she definitely could be the key to a winning tournament lineup. Oh, and Han Xu is 6’9, and 3.1k on FD. If she is playing backup center minutes, I could easily see 5x value and 15 fantasy points. She is far too expensive on DK, however.

Good luck, and I hope to see you at the top!
