When to watch Alyssa Thomas, DiJonai Carrington, Marina Mabrey play in Unrivaled

The inaugural season of Unrivaled is one of the most exciting things happening this WNBA offseason. Several of the WNBA’s biggest stars will all be playing in the same place, making money, and working on their games without having to go overseas. The new 3-on-3 league founded by Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart will tip off on January 17 in Miami and already has WNBA fans hyped up about the competition between the six clubs as well as the 1v1 tournament that will take place in February. 

The Connecticut Sun are sending three current players to Miami: Alyssa Thomas, DiJonai Carrington, and Marina Mabrey. 

Thomas will be suiting up for the Laces Basketball Club, which might just be the strongest team in Unrivaled. Between Jackie Young, Kayla McBride, Stephanie Dolson, Tiffany Hayes, Kate Martin, and Alyssa Thomas, the Laces have plenty of veteran experience, defense, 3-point shooting, and playmaking to excel in the 3-on-3 format. Since the Laces do not really have a traditional point guard, most of the offense will likely run through Alyssa Thomas, and Sun fans can look forward to seeing her on the court a lot. 

Carrington’s team has a strong case as one of the top teams in the league as well, though. The Mist will feature Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot, Jewell Loyd, Aaliyah Edwards, and Rickea Jackson next to Carrington. If they start Loyd, Stewart, and Carrington, the trio could be a true two-way force with a great playmaker and two interesting young players coming off the bench. Plus, Loyd and Stewart already won WNBA championships together. Maybe they can also conquer the competition in Unrivaled. 

Meanwhile, Mabrey will suit up for the Phantom Basketball Club alongside Satou Sabally, Brittney Griner, Natasha Cloud, Katie Lou Samuelson, and Sabrina Ionescu. While the Phantom have two great scorers in Ionescu and Sabally, this may be the weakest team out of the three clubs featuring a Sun player. Defensively, they will have to rely heavily on Mabrey and Cloud while also playing one of the less athletic bigs in the league. Griner is still a great interior scorer but might struggle to keep up with some of the other bigs she will have to face, as most Unrivaled games will be played with much spacing and a fast pace.
