UConn women's basketball star Azzi Fudd recently suffered an injury scare. It was later revealed that the injury is not expected to be too serious, however. Fudd's teammate, Paige Bueckers, reacted to the important injury update, via UConn on SNY.
"Just as people who know her, who are like family, just for her to have to keep going through these things, even this situation is unfortunate," Bueckers said. "It's very frustrating because she's just coming back. She's been looking great the past couple of games. It's much better that it's a minor setback and I I know she's gonna stay hungry, stay in the weight room, continue to do everything that she can to get back on the court as soon as possible."
So what exactly is the injury that Fudd is dealing with?
Azzi Fudd's injury concern
Fudd suffered a knee injury scare during UConn's 85-52 victory over Louisville on Saturday. Fudd has dealt with injury trouble over the years, so there was immediate concern over the situation. Alexa Philippou of ESPN reported on Wednesday that Fudd suffered a "minor knee sprain" and is expected to miss UConn's game on Thursday against Notre Dame. According to Philippou, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma said Fudd will be day-to-day following Thursday's game.
Injuries are never a good thing, but this situation could have been much worse. UConn has serious championship aspirations, but they will need Fudd on the floor without question. Overall, the team has gone 8-0 to begin the 2024-25 season.
Additionally, Fudd is expected to be one of the top selections in the WNBA Draft.
Azzi Fudd's bright future
The 22-year-old was limited to two games during the 2023-24 season due to an injury. She has played in five total games this season, returning after the start of the 2024-25 campaign. Fudd has played well as she has returned to action, averaging 10 points per outing on 50 percent field goal shooting. She is also recording 2.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.8 steals per game.
Barring any setbacks, it appears that Azzi Fudd will be able to return sooner rather than later. There is no set injury timeline for her return, though. UConn will likely be without her on Thursday before later providing updates on her injury status.
No. 2 UConn women's basketball and No. 8 Notre Dame women's basketball will play in what projects to be an especially competitive affair on Thursday night at 7 PM EST.
