UConn women's basketball earned an 85-52 victory over Louisville on Saturday. However, the win did not come without some concerns, as Azzi Fudd endured an injury scare. Fudd, who previously dealt with a knee injury, was seen heading to the locker room after falling to the floor and reaching for her knee during the game. She was able to return to the bench later in the contest, but Fudd did not play following the injury scare. UConn head coach Geno Auriemma addressed the situation after the game, via Daniel Connolly.
"She was walking around, she was fine," Auriemma said. "It didn't look like the worst case scenario. We'll know more when we get back but – I hope I'm right – but it's not that worst-case scenario we've seen so many times."
UConn improved to 8-0 with the win. Sarah Strong led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds. Fudd was in the middle of a strong effort before the injury scare, as she recorded 18 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Paige Bueckers has led the way for most of the season, but UConn has certainly received impactful contributions from a number of players on the roster. The team entered Saturday's game ranked No. 2 overall, and it is clear that UConn has an opportunity to make a championship run. Still, Auriemma knows how important each game is. He also understands that losing a player such as Fudd would be a disastrous situation, so UConn is unquestionably hopeful that she will receive promising news as soon as possible.
UConn needs Azzi Fudd
Fudd, 22, is one of the best players in all of women's college basketball when healthy. Fudd and Bueckers feature the potential to be one of the best duos in the sport.
She has only played in five games since returning from injury, but Fudd is averaging 10 points on 50 percent field goal shooting during that span. UConn is being cautious with her playing time, as Fudd has only averaged 19.2 minutes per outing this season, but her impact is of the utmost importance.
UConn women's basketball will continue to hope for the best possible results. They need Azzi Fudd on the floor to say the least.
UConn set for difficult matchup
UConn has played well during the 2024-25 campaign, however, they will play against No. 10 Notre Dame on Thursday. That game projects to be especially competitive, as Notre Dame is more than capable of pulling off an upset.
UConn should know more about Fudd's injury status ahead of Thursday's game. Regardless of whether or not Fudd is available, the UConn women's basketball team will need to be on top of their game against Notre Dame.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM EST.
