It's win-or-bust for the New York Liberty this season. The franchise went all in on a star-studded roster expected to compete at the summit of the regular-season standings. Yet, injuries to key players and poor performances have cast doubt over this team's ability to win a championship. Sabrina Ionescu's worrying scoring form is a major contributor to that uncertainty. If the Liberty star can't rediscover her offensive magic, then the season may already be over.
To lay all the blame at Ionescu's door would be unfair. Under Chris DeMarco's tutelage, New York has struggled to establish a winning culture. Not only has there been a lack of tactical clarity, but Satou Sabally and Ionescu's health issues have also limited the Liberty's chances of building up championship momentum.
While it's hardly been a disastrous season in New York, this is a fan base that has come to expect success on the court in recent years -- and rightly so. With Breanna Stewart, Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones at their disposal, the franchise should be considered a WNBA superpower.
However, a star-studded roster is only as strong as its weakest link, and the fact of the matter is that Sabrina Ionescu's offensive woes are not just affecting the Liberty's performances in the regular season; they could derail their entire championship vision.
Ionescu's recent form has been a major cause for concern
If basic statistics are anything to go by, the Oregon alum is having an impressive campaign. Ionescu is averaging 15.1 points, four rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. In theory, this production level alongside Stewart and Jones should be enough to ignite hopes of eternal glory, but life isn't as perfect as it seems in the 'Big Apple'.
Before the FIBA World Cup break, the 28-year-old turned in a worrying performance against a struggling Chicago Sky team. New York chalked up a dominant 85-66 victory over their opponents; however, Ionescu didn't bury any of her 10 shot attempts and could only register two points.
Sabrina Ionescu's struggles came off the back of a 79-60 defeat to the Golden State Valkyries in which she recorded seven points while shooting just 16.7% from the floor. Including her Chicago nightmare, the Liberty star guard has now shot below 35% from the field in 11 of her 27 appearances.
Even for a high-volume shooter, offensive performances of this nature can't contribute to winning, and effectively won't help the New York Liberty lift the championship trophy once again. Nobody will be unhappier with her showings than Sabrina Ionescu herself. She must find a way to rekindle her confidence before it's too late.
