Rhyne Howard made just one of her nine 3-pointers in the Atlanta Dream’s 103-59 win against the Connecticut Sun. But the one she made was huge. With that shot, Howard set a new single-season record for made 3-pointers—and she did it in 40 games, so the fact that there are more games in this season didn’t really factor into her new record. She did play four more games than Sabrina Ionescu, who set the previous record in 2023, but that’s because Ionescu was hurt.
In the postgame press conference, Howard said, “It’s going to be plenty more records, 3-point records, with my name on it.”
That is a bold declaration, considering how many great 3-point shooters there are in the WNBA, but it is also not outlandish. Howard is more than capable of breaking many more 3-point records throughout her career. She is, after all, not unfamiliar with breaking records and still has plenty of time left in the league.
Rhyne Howard is one of the best 3-point shooters in the W
Earlier this year, Howard became the fastest player to 100 made 3-pointers. She is also one of just nine players who have made at least nine 3-pointers in a game and one of just two who did it twice. Since entering the league in 2022, she has never finished a regular season outside of the top ten in total made 3-pointers. She finished third as a rookie, fifth in her second season, tenth the year after, and third again last year.
Howard’s 3-point percentage does not reflect how good a shooter she is. If she finishes this season shooting 36% or better, it will be a career high.
One thing that influences Howard’s 3-point percentage is the sheer number of shots she takes. She currently leads the league in 3-point attempts with nine per game. She has taken 368 total 3-pointers. That’s 70 more than the next-closest person. This 3-point volume isn’t an outlier either. Howard led the W in 3-pointers per game last season and finished fourth in each of the three seasons prior.
Howard is bound to break her own single-season 3-point record—maybe even a few times. She is, after all, only 26 years old. Moreover, the season will continue to expand, and Howard will be an offensive focal point for many, many more years.
To this point, Kayla McBride is the only player who has ever made 10 3-pointers in a game. Looking around the league, Howard is one of the few players who could possibly rival that number.
