Sky agree to contract extension with forward as WNBA season comes to an end
The Chicago Sky still technically have a chance to reach the postseason as of this story's writing. However, the Sky's odds have decreased over the past week. Chicago is in 10th place in the WNBA standings, trailing the Atlanta Dream and Washington Mystics in the battle for the No. 8 spot. Regardless of whether or not the Sky reach the playoffs, they did agree to an extension with forward Elizabeth Williams on Thursday, the team announced.
Williams, 31, will now remain with the team through the 2025 season. She has played an impactful role with Chicago during her two seasons with the Sky. So far in 2024, Williams is averaging 10.0 points per game on 48.7 percent field goal shooting. The Sky forward is also recording 7.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.7 blocks per outing.
Elizabeth Williams' WNBA career
Williams made her WNBA debut during the 2015 campaign with the Connecticut Sun. She would spend only one season in Connecticut before joining the Dream in 2016.
Williams immediately saw more playing time and won the WNBA Most Improved Player during the '16 campaign. She followed that up by earning a WNBA All-Star Game selection in 2017.
Williams established herself as a steady offensive presence in Atlanta. She also took a big step forward on the defensive end of the floor, becoming a reliable all-around defender.
Williams played with the Dream from 2016-2021. In 2022, she joined the Mystics. Williams had started for the Dream but played a backup role for the Mystics. Nevertheless, she still made an impact.
Williams returned to a starting role in 2023 with the Sky. She appeared in all 40 games while playing at a high level. In 2024, Williams has been limited to only nine games played. Nevertheless, the Sky clearly value everything she offers the team.
Sky's 2024 season
The Sky will enter Thursday's regular season finale with a 13-26 record. It is a must-win game for Chicago, as they are set to play the Sun on the road. Connecticut will present a challenge to say the least, so finding a way to pull off the upset will be a challenge.
Chicago has hope for the future, though. Angel Reese displayed signs of stardom throughout the 2024 season. Although Reese's season came to an early end due to injury, she has already established herself as one of the better players in the WNBA.
The team has a quality core of players as well. Perhaps they will take a step forward in 2025.
