A'ja Wilson is the 2024 WNBA MVP. No, it hasn't been made official yet, but there's no doubt the Las Vegas Aces superstar deserves to win the award for the third time. Sunday solidified that.
Wilson became the first player in WNBA history to surpass 1,000 points in the Aces' 84-71 win over the Sun. She finished with a game-high 29 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. She's averaging a league-high 27 points per game on 51.9% shooting from the field.
It sounds cliché, but don't take what A'ja is doing for granted. She's the best player in the league and one of the best WNBA players of all time. You can argue that she should've won the MVP award last year. Maybe that had a little something to do with her unbelievable 2024 season. She's not done yet, either.
There is still another single-season record for A'ja to break. As USA Today's Meghan L. Hall pointed out, Wilson is three rebounds away from breaking the single-season rebound record.
A'ja Wilson can break single-season rebound record against Storm
Two weeks ago, Sky rookie Angel Reese broke the single-season rebound record, surpassing Sylvia Fowles' previous record of 404 rebounds. Reese's remarkable season was cut short after she underwent season-ending wrist surgery last week. She finished 2024 with 446 rebounds. A'ja currently has 444 rebounds.
You can argue that A'ja won't hold the record for more than a season, assuming that Angel stays healthy in 2025. She's more dominant on the boards than the soon-to-be three-time MVP, but that shouldn't take away from all that A'ja has accomplished (and will accomplish) this season.
Wilson and the Aces can make history together this season if they win their third-straight title. New York has by far been the best team in the W, but don't count Las Vegas out. The Aces currently are the No. 4 seed. If the playoffs started today, Las Vegas would play Seattle, which makes Tuesday's game at Climate Pledge Arena that much more interesting.
If you didn't watch A'ja make history on Sunday, tune in to NBA TV tomorrow night. The game will tip-off at 10 p.m. ET. It's a late start for those on the East Coast, but it shouldn't take long for A'ja to record three rebounds. After all, she's averaging 12 per game.
In case you need another reminder -- Appreciate what A'ja Wilson is doing (and has done) for the WNBA!
