The New York Liberty agreed to a training camp contract with former Chicago Sky guard Rebekah Gardner on Wednesday, per WNBA.com. The move provides the Sky, who are fresh off a championship season, with added guard depth. Perhaps Gardner can play a big role in the 2025 campaign as New York looks to win another championship.
The Liberty feature plenty of talented players, but adding depth is of the utmost importance. Of course, adding All-Star players wouldn't hurt either, but depth is crucial.
What Rebekah Gardner brings to Liberty
Gardner, 34, made her WNBA debut in 2022 with the Sky. She played in 35 games, starting two contests. Gardner averaged 8.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.4 steals per outing during her first season in the league.
In 2023, Gardner played in only three games. She averaged seven points during that span. Gardner has not played in a WNBA game since the '23 campaign, something she is hoping will change in 2025.
Gardner was traded to the Liberty in 2024. Although she did not appear in any games, the team clearly believes she has potential given their decision to previously trade for her and now sign her. If Gardner plays well in the preseason, she may have an opportunity to earn playing time.
Liberty trying to defend championship title
The Liberty enjoyed a tremendous 2024 season. The Las Vegas Aces had won back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023, but the Liberty ended their streak this past season. With Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu leading the way, the Liberty should have an opportunity to compete for another championship.
It will be interesting to see if New York attempts to add any other stars. Satou Sabally has been mentioned as a possible trade target, while there will be a number of intriguing players available in free agency. Regardless of whether or not the Liberty make a big move this offseason, they will be among the favorites to win the 2025 WNBA Finals.
Underrated moves such as signing Rebekah Gardner should not be overlooked. Most championship-caliber teams have plenty of non-superstars step up. Signing Gardner will not make or break the Liberty's season, but New York clearly believes she is capable of helping them repeat as champions. They will give her the chance to make the team, so Gardner needs to take advantage of the opportunity.
