Not long after the end of the 2024 WNBA season, rumors emerged that Satou Sabally would want to leave Dallas. She will be a free agent soon, but the Wings can still core her to avoid losing her for nothing, and other teams would have to trade for her. By now, Sabally has made it official, as Alexa Philippou reported that the forward has told the Wings of her plans to leave Dallas ahead of the 2025 season.

Sabally’s social media interactions with Fever fans sparked rumors that she would be headed to Indiana soon. She would be a great fit next to Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston and could push the Fever to the next level.

Indiana is not the only potential landing spot for Sabally, though.

The New York Liberty could add Sabally to their super team

After winning the franchise’s first WNBA championship in the 2024 season, the New York Liberty hardly seem in need of another star. Between Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones, they already have a strong core of stars. However, that does not mean that they won’t try to add another big name to improve their chances of repeating.

With the Minnesota Lynx and Las Vegas Aces, among others, eyeing a championship as well, the Liberty are not guaranteed to return to the finals. They will have a target on their backs, and winning it all for a second time will be difficult. Adding Satou Sabally to the mix would definitely help with that.

The Liberty certainly have an enticing case. Sabally most likely wants to join a winning team and a better situation than the one she is hoping to leave behind. New York can offer her just that. Even with a target on its back and after losing Kayla Thornton to the Golden State Valkyries in the expansion draft, this team will win a lot of games.

On top of that, Satou Sabally played with Sabrina Ionescu at Oregon (they will also be teammates while playing for Unrivaled again), and her sister Nyara plays for the Liberty. The two already enjoyed one championship parade together, but it surely would have been more fun if they had won together. If the Liberty traded for Sabally, that dream could potentially become a reality.

Obviously, New York won’t be the only team trying to land Sabally—the Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky, and Golden State Valkyries, for example, will surely make offers—but the Liberty could put together an enticing package of players and draft picks. They own the rights to several players who were not even on the roster in 2024, and most of their future draft picks.
