The 2025 WNBA Draft was a big one for the Washington Mystics. They may not have landed Paige Bueckers or Dominique Malonga, but they brought in plenty of young talent. The Mystics selected Sonia Citron, Kiki Iriafen, and Georgia Amoore with picks three, four, and six and added Lucy Olsen in the second round.

The three first-round picks were expected to play significant roles right away, as the Mystics are trying to amass and develop as much high-level talent as possible. Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen will still get those chances, but Georgia Amoore suffered an ACL injury during training camp and will have to miss significant time.

While losing Amoore before the season even started is a heavy blow to the Mystics, it also opens up an opportunity for another young player. Between Shakira Austin, Aaliyah Edwards, Kiki Iriafen, and veteran Stefanie Dolson, the Mystics have a stacked frontcourt. Their guard rotation is not quite as strong, and Amoore’s injury creates a massive hole.

Lucy Olsen may get to play a bigger role for the Mystics now

With Amoore sidelined, second-round pick Lucy Olsen may get a chance to play significant minutes in the Mystics’ guard rotation. Olsen played her college basketball for the Villanova Wildcats and Iowa Hawkeyes, averaging 17.9 points on pretty efficient shooting, 3.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.3 steals as a senior at Iowa. She was the team’s leading scorer and playmaker.

Even after putting up big numbers in college, it can be difficult for second-round picks to make a name for themselves in the WNBA. For Olsen, it might have gotten a bit easier, as she should not just get a chance to make the roster but also to play significant minutes.

Last season, the Mystics’ top guards in minutes per game were Ariel Atkins, Brittney Skyes, Julie Vanloo, and Jade Melbourne. Atkins has since been traded to the Chicago Sky, and Vanloo was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the expansion draft in December, leaving only Skyes and Melbourne.

Georgia Amoore was supposed to fill the hole left by their departures and maybe even establish herself as one of the Mystics’ guards of the future. Due to her injury, that will have to wait and someone else will need to fill the void.

Olsen could be that person, providing scoring and playmaking at the guard spot. Getting a bigger role than expected would be great for Olsen’s development. It may not lead to much team success, though, and the Mystics could end up in the lottery again.
