It may be fair to say that the Indiana Fever is one of the teams in the WNBA that operates under the most scrutiny. It may even be fair to say the Fever operates under the highest level of scrutiny of any team in the league. And, from what a few players have said lately, it sounds like a lot of that scrutiny comes from the team's fans, or at least a portion of them.

There's been a lot of confusing information coming out of Fever HQ of late. The team's GM Amber Cox insisted that "attacks on our fanbase have no basis in reality" and noted that "members of the media" who have never attended games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse are often drivers of those attacks. Cox's point about attending games in person is an important one, and there are plenty of valid arguments to be made in favor of the idea that it's hard to speak to something you haven't experienced — if a reporter is writing about a fanbase that they haven't actually experienced in person, their take could be... skewed. Because if you aren't there in person, and you aren't meeting fans of the team, what exactly is your source?

But when members of the team began disputing Cox's statement, people paid attention. After all, if anyone knows what their fans are like, it's the players on the Fever. They experience fans on social media, at games, and at events. While speaking to reporters after the team exited the playoffs in the first round, Kelsey Mitchell commented, "I don’t think people really understand how much we endure."

"Like, if I showed y’all my DMs about the hate and all of the stuff that comes with being a professional athlete, but specifically being an Indiana Fever basketball player, it’s a lot that goes into that. And those days are hard as hell," she added. Mitchell also said that the rest of the Fever gets "a lot of flak" for playing on the same team as Caitlin Clark.

Mitchell also made it clear she was speaking about the team's fans. She said, "Showing up every day to compete for fans that may or may not like you is hard."

It's one thing for fans to be passionate about their team, but it's quite another to lob abuse at the members of that same team in the process. That's where things cross the line from passionate to being wrong — even inappropriate and mean. Mitchell brings a lot to the table as a Fever player and has shown a lot of loyalty to the franchise, and to those fans. She's also known for being level-headed and a leader, and if she's speaking up, it may mean it's time to clean house.
