Who knows where Kelsey Mitchell's future lies? After a historic scoring campaign, the Indiana Fever fanbase will be desperate for her to return to the franchise. However, if the star confirms she won't return to Indiana, the team must embrace the transition, constructing a more balanced roster with the sole focus of improving its defensive frailties.
Kelsey Mitchell was incredible for the Fever during the 2026 WNBA season. She averaged 24.7 points per game while shooting a career-high 50.9% from the field and 45% from deep. Caitlin Clark may be the player who has received the most plaudits for Indiana's recent improvement, but Mitchell has played an equally pivotal role.
Nevertheless, despite Mitchell and Clark consistently stunning their opposition with glorious offensive displays, they lack the defensive presence a championship-bound team requires. The Fever ranked eighth in defensive rating (109.0) during the regular season. This might not be a disastrous total, but it is one that ultimately restricted their chances of reaching their season ambitions.
While losing the Ohio State legend to free agency would be a crushing blow to the team's 2027 championship hopes, it creates an opportunity to finally address the Fever's defensive issues that have slowed their journey to greatness.
Change doesn't have to be a disaster for Indiana
Due to the expiration of several contracts this offseason, the Indiana Fever will need to be active in free agency and the draft process. In recent times, the front office has been tunnel-visioned in its approach to help Caitlin Clark win a championship, rather than taking a step back and carefully building future foundations.
If defense is the aim, then Indiana already has the perfect partner for Caitlin Clark before they look to add more defensive generals. Raven Johnson's gritty and selfless personality has made her a resilient force throughout her collegiate career, and she deserves the chance to prove herself at the highest level.
After cementing the 10th overall pick in the 2027 WNBA draft, the Fever have a chance to build upon the resilient culture Raven Johnson brings to the lineup. Former South Carolina teammate Tessa Johnson is likely to still be available at this point in the process -- unless she has a stellar senior year.
Tessa Johnson might not be a renowned defender like Raven, but as a graduate of Dawn Staley's all-effort system, her spirited mentality will give Indiana a much-needed bite on that side of the ball. As a 44% shooter from deep, Johnson's offensive attributes blend perfectly with Stephanie White's current Fever blueprint. As the legendary LSU head coach Kim Mulkey once asked, "Can anybody guard Tessa?"
No team in the league would be ecstatic about losing a phenomenal talent like Kelsey Mitchell, but sometimes life throws curveballs, and you must adjust accordingly. By embracing her potential exit, the Indiana Fever have the opportunity to address a flaw limiting championship success: their defense.
