There's been a lot of conversation this week about Kelsey Mitchell's future with the Indiana Fever. Much of that was spurred by Mitchell herself, who used part of her exit interview to refute claims made by GM Amber Cox, and to hint that she may be on her way out of the organization.
Mitchell has had a banner season this year. She was the number two scorer in the league, sandwiched between A'ja Wilson and teammate Caitlin Clark. There are plenty of reasons why many fans expect her to remain with the team that drafted her in 2018, but also plenty of reasons why it might not be too surprising if she left.
Mitchell expressed concern about some of the team's fans, and revealed she's received all kinds of messages via social media from those who claim to love the team. Unfortunately, not all of those messages are kind, and Mitchell said that anyone who plays with Clark is under a different kind of scrutiny than other players.
Despite that, the Minnesota Lynx's Courtney Williams isn't so sure that it's a good idea for Mitchell to go. While speaking during an interview on the It Takes Two podcast, Williams explained that Mitchell has had the best season of her career — and she's done so because she plays with Clark, not in spite of that fact.
Also, as Williams put it, just because a different team or situation seems better doesn't mean they actually are. Mitchell, she said, could end up walking away from a team and situation that's working more than it's not.
Williams admitted that she understands it's probably tough to play on a team that gets the kind of attention the Fever does. As she put it, "I don't know. I feel like when you find that type of chemistry, I get that it comes with a lot of noise, because obviously with the Indiana fanbase and all the eyes that come with Clark, I understand all that."
But, she said, the basketball of it all is a compelling reason to stay. She added, "But basketball-wise? You had some of your best years, and those folks over there are giving you a bag. Y'all have been over there building something together. So I'm just saying, bro, that grass ain't all that green."
The Fever offered Mitchell a supermax contract for the 2026 season, and she can't get that deal again. It's unclear what might be on the table if she chooses to return to Indiana in 2027. Mitchell, who is from Ohio, may also pursue the Cleveland Sirens, who are set to make their debut in the league in 2028.
