The Chicago Sky made multiple roster moves on Monday, the team announced. After waiving Moriah Jefferson, Chicago signed Sevgi Uzun. Uzun, a 27-year-old guard, could prove to be a steal for the Sky.
It has been a challenging season for this Sky team. They are among the worst teams in the league at the moment. Angel Reese has played well, but overall, it has been a disappointing campaign. There is hope, though. The team is building around Reese, and Uzun may be a player who can help the sky moving forward.
Uzun made her WNBA debut in 2024 with the Dallas Wings. She averaged 4.4 points, 3.0 assists and 1.6 rebounds per outing while shooting 34.2 percent on her field goal attempts. She appeared in all 40 games, starting 19 total contests.
Uzun presented the team with an element of versatility. She could play either guard position while making an impact as either a starter or coming off the bench. Sure, her numbers don't jump off the page, but Uzun helped the Wings.
She was traded to the Phoenix Mercury this past offseason. In seven games played with Phoenix, Uzun averaged 1.6 points per contest. However, she saw her minutes decrease to 14.6 per game after averaging 20.5 minutes per outing during the '24 campaign. Following her seven games played, the Mercury decided to go in a different direction.
Uzun may not have star potential -- although anything is possible -- but she is certainly capable of making a positive impact for the Sky. Chicago is trying to figure things out and adding a reliable guard such as Uzun will only help the situation.
The decision to waive Jefferson was surely difficult. The 31-year-old's veteran prowess was surely valued in Chicago. She averaged 1.4 points, 1.8 assists and 1.0 rebounds per game across five total contests played with the Sky. She saw just seven minutes per outing.
Turning to Uzun gives the Sky a player who could possibly impact the team for years to come. She will need to display her potential during the second half, but it would not be surprising to see Chicago try to keep Uzun for the 2026 season.
The Sky have work to do. They are not a contender yet. If they continue to add players with bright futures around superstar Angel Reese, though, perhaps Chicago can emerge as a contender sooner than expected.
