When a player is as great with the ball in their hands as Caitlin Clark is, fans understandably want to see her handle the rock as much as possible. So, there have been some mixed reactions among Fever fans anytime someone, whether that’s coach Stephanie White or an analyst, brings up the idea of playing Clark more off the ball.
Turns out, Clark actually wants to play off the ball every once in a while, according to a clip from training camp that the Indy Star’s Chloe Peterson posted on X.
When asked about potential moving off the ball in some situations, Clark said, “It’s exhausting bringing the ball up the floor 94 feet versus pressure every single time, so we certainly need to find someone that can handle the ball a bit and give me a little bit of a break. I think Raven and Ty, even other people through camp, have done a great job.”

She also credited Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston for their ability to take on some of the playmaking responsibilities.
The Fever have a deep guard rotation this season
There’s no doubt about the Fever’s starting backcourt this season. Barring any injuries, Clark and Mitchell will be running the show. But the Fever’s front office also assembled great depth behind them.
Ty Harris was the starting point for a Connecticut Sun team that finished the 2024 season with the best defensive rating in the league and the third-best record in the league. Raven Johnson made her living as a floor general and outstanding defender in college and will bring the same skills to the W. The two make for a very talented backup guard duo.
Other than that, the Fever also brought Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Jessica Timmons, Megan McConnell, and Kayana Traylor in for training camp.
Sophie Cunningham can also handle some of the ballhandling responsibilities if the Fever deal with injuries again.
Clark could be deadly off the ball
Clark does great things with the ball in her hands, like creating her own shot or passing Boston the ball in just the right spot. But she could be even deadlier if Stephanie White can move her off the ball every once in a while, bring her off screens, and get her looks from behind the arc that way.
Moving Clark off the ball doesn’t just alleviate the pressure on her and ease her workload, it also gives the Fever’s offense another dimension and a whole new set of plays and schemes to frustrate defenses with.
