Angel Reese is in a critical stretch in her career. Her debut with the senior national team at the World Cup in Berlin is coming up, and she will make her WNBA playoff debut with the Atlanta Dream after two losing seasons in Chicago.
Reese looks ready for the moment, playing perhaps the best basketball of her WNBA career. After missing a game-winning layup against the Indiana Fever, Reese has been on a tear. She recorded two 20-point double-doubles, including a perfect shooting performance in a 124-88 win against the Los Angeles Sparks. Then, she set a new career high with 31 points on 66.7% shooting from the field in a ten-point victory against the Phoenix Mercury.
After that, Reese recorded a career-high 26 rebounds, including eight offensive boards, in a seven-point win against the Sparks. It wasn’t just a new high for her, but for the entire league. No one had ever grabbed that many rebounds in a single game. The previous record was 24, set by Chamique Holdsclaw in 2003.
Reese also already set a new record for total rebounds in a single season with six games still left to play. Reese is currently at 458. The previous record was A’ja Wilson’s 451 in 2024.
With two career milestones coming up, Reese couldn’t have reached this new level of play at a better time.
Reese has a lot to prove in the playoffs
Reese spent her first two seasons in the WNBA frustrated with the Chicago Sky’s lack of success and inability to put a winning team around her. Now, she has a chance to prove that she was right to want to play for a better team and that she’s ready to help a team win in the playoffs. Brionna Jones is out again, and there has been no update on her situation, so she might not be available for the playoffs or won’t be at 100%. Either way, Reese will have to play big minutes.
Her new team has a lot riding on Reese’s ability to make a difference at the next level. The Dream suffered three consecutive first-round exits, including a brutal upset at the hands of the injured Indiana Fever last year. There’s a lot of pressure on the team to win a playoff series with Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray leading the charge. If Reese continues to play as she has these last four games, it will vastly improve the Dream’s chances to accomplish that.
