There's a lot surrounding the WNBA that feels Very Serious right now. That's largely because it is actually serious — with growth comes scrutiny, with increased attention comes increased opportunities to say what's on your mind. It's not too surprising some players have felt comfortable sharing their opinions this season when they're constantly surrounded by phones, cameras, and recorders, many of which are wielded by people who are just looking to create a viral social media moment for themselves.
The attention and resulting headlines can feel chaotic. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert is correct that "haters" are indeed attempting to sow discord within a league they don't understand or even really care about. Natasha Cloud was right to call out groups of men are once again tossing sex toys onto the court during games, behavior that is both demeaning and disruptive. Though Breanna Stewart previously revealed she'd donated money from her Harry Potter-themed shoes in 2025, it's worth bringing up again so that she can make her own beliefs well known.
In the middle of all of this is the fact that we're roughly five games from the end of the season, which is historically a really compelling and fun part of the year. The Lynx, Valkyries, Aces, Fever, and Dream have all clinced spots in the playoffs, and that means three other teams — the Liberty, Wings, and Mystics, most likely — are on their way to doing the same. Players are absolutely balling out right now and putting on some of their best performances this season, and some of that is getting lost.
All of the topics that are being covered right now should be — it's all important, it all matters, and players and leadership in the league should feel empowered to speak up. Reporters should ask the right questions and follow-up questions and push those who want to speak out to explain themselves more. But on top of that, we should take a moment to enjoy the big moments and the fun ones, and right now, a lot of those are being delivered by Angel Reese.
Reese dropped a career-high 31 points Saturday against the Phoenix Mercury, an effort that helped the Dream win 99-89 and officially ruled the 12th-ranked Mercury out of playoffs contention (though it was unlikely they would have made it there no matter what). She also had 14 rebounds, which resulted in her 25th double-double of the season.
The effort did a lot to silence critics, especially those who are always looking for a whisper of something to criticize about Reese's game. It's also coming at exactly the right time; if Reese carries this energy into the playoffs, the Dream will be very formidable challengers to each team they meet. On top of all of that, it's just fun to see a player go as hard as Reese is right now — and that's also something that's just as important as the rest of it.
