At the beginning of the Liberty’s Head Coach search, GM Jonathan Kolb believes that “winners are built from the locker room.”

The New York Liberty have had a busy offseason: a number one draft pick, and a new home in Brooklyn. A day before the announcement that New York would move Barclays center permanently, the team decided that the buck stopped in Westchester for former head coach Katie Smith.

“I want to say Katie [Smith] has been a class act for the past couple of seasons,” GM Jonathan Kolb said in a phone interview with High Post Hoops. “The outcomes have been tough in terms of our record. We have to evaluate a fresh start going forward.”

The Liberty’s off-season won’t only include college scouting — although assuming all else is equal, the decision appears to be clear with Sabrina Ionescu — but will also be consumed with determining who will be next to lead the New York Liberty into their new era.

Kolb acknowledged that it’s too early to have not only a developed vision for his team, but also a list of criteria that he will look for in his new coach.

Not for us.

Who should be on the top of the Liberty’s list and what must they have to be Brooklyn bound in 2020?
