The team captains drafted their teams, then decided on what changes to make.

All the voting was done, and it was time to assign players to the two teams. Highest vote-getters and team captains Elena Delle Donne and A’ja Wilson took care of that on ESPN2 Tuesday evening. They also had a couple of trades up their sleeves.

The draft

As the top vote-getter in All-Star voting, Delle Donne got to select first in the opening round, which assigned starters to the two teams. Wilson got to draft first when selecting the reserves in the second round.

First Round (Starters)

  1. Brittney Griner, Phoenix Mercury (Team Delle Donne)
  2. Chelsea Gray, Los Angeles Sparks (Team Wilson)
  3. Jewell Loyd, Seattle Storm (Team Delle Donne)
  4. Kayla McBride, Las Vegas Aces (Team Wilson)
  5. Jonquel Jones, Connecticut Sun (Team Delle Donne)
  6. Liz Cambage, Las Vegas Aces (Team Wilson)
  7. Kia Nurse, New York Liberty (Team Delle Donne)
  8. Natasha Howard, Seattle Storm (Team Wilson)

Second Round (Reserves)

  1. Sylvia Fowles, Minnesota Lynx (Team Wilson)
  2. Kristi Toliver, Washington Mystics (Team Delle Donne)
  3. Diamond DeShields, Chicago Sky (Team Wilson)
  4. DeWanna Bonner, Phoenix Mercury (Team Delle Donne)
  5. Allie Quigley, Chicago Sky (Team Wilson)
  6. Nneka Ogwumike, Los Angeles Sparks (Team Delle Donne)
  7. Tina Charles, New York Liberty (Team Wilson)
  8. Courtney Vandersloot, Chicago Sky (Team Delle Donne)
  9. Erica Wheeler, Indiana Fever (Team Wilson)
  10. Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx (Team Delle Donne)
  11. Candice Dupree, Indiana Fever (Team Wilson)
  12. Alyssa Thomas, Connecticut Sun (Team Delle Donne)
  13. Odyssey Sims, Minnesota Lynx (Team Wilson)

The draft didn’t end the decision-making, though. Delle Donne had some other ideas. As the coach of the team with the best record, Las Vegas Aces coach Bill Laimbeer should have been coaching the team of the highest vote-getter, Team Delle Donne. Delle Donne’s own coach, Mike Thibault, was set to coach Team Wilson. The captains quickly decided to swap their coaches.

Delle Donne’s next pitch was to get Tina Charles from Wilson. Her offer was for rookie Collier, who had been named to the game to replace Wilson. Again, Wilson was agreeable.
