UConn’s Mikayla Coombs is moving closer to home, while Texas’s Destiny Littleton is heading east.

As the summer gets underway, some college women’s basketball players are coming out from the other side of the NCAA transfer portal to new teams. This week, it was announced that two SEC schools will gain some experience for their respective squads in the coming years.

From Huskies to Bulldogs: Coombs to play at UGA

Former UConn guard Mikayla Coombs will transfer to the University of Georgia, according to an announcement from the school Monday. The move brings her closer to home, as the UGA campus is only about an hour southeast of her hometown of Buford, Ga.

“Mikayla is the complete package,” UGA head coach Joni Taylor said in the school’s press release. “Her accolades speak for themselves, but what I am most excited about is that she is a high-character young lady who is coming back home to play for her state. We pride ourselves in that, and I am so glad she has made the decision to join our program. Mikayla’s athleticism is off the charts and she is an explosive play-maker. She is someone Lady Bulldog fans will enjoy watching over the next few years.”

According to the Associated Press, Coombs is applying for a waiver that, if granted, would allow her to play on the Bulldogs immediately without having to sit out a season. She will have two years of eligibility left at Georgia either way.

Coombs had a stellar high school career, leading the Wesleyan School to a state title after suffering a torn ACL. She was also named to the 2017 Naismith and WBCA All-America Teams as a high schooler. Coombs averaged just under one point per game in 31 contests for the Huskies in her sophomore season before announcing her plans to transfer last month.

From Big 12 to SEC: Destiny Littleton moving to South Carolina

Former Texas guard Destiny Littleton is heading east after an improved sophomore season. She announced her plans to transfer to South Carolina on social media Monday.

Littleton averaged 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Longhorns in 2018-19; she saw action in all 33 of Texas’s contests and started in 12 games. She played the third-highest number of minutes on the team according to the University of Texas. A native of La Jolla, Calif., and a former McDonald’s All-American, Littleton set the state scoring record with 4,300 points in her high school career at the Bishop’s School. The mark is also good for 25th highest of all time according to MaxPreps.

Her offensive power is expected to make a big impact on South Carolina’s squad. The Gamecocks lost three players to transfers after the 2018-19 season, including leading scorer Te’a Cooper. Though the Associated Press reports that Littleton will sit out next season based on eligibility rules, her high school coach and mentor Marion Wells told The (Charleston, S.C.) State that she hopes to apply for a waiver to play sooner.
