Emma Cannon returns to the WNBA

Connecticut Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller is adding even more rebounding talent after signing Emma Cannon to a training camp contract. This comes just one night after drafting Kristine Anigwe who led the nation in rebounding last season.

The 6’2 forward should fit right in down in Uncasville. The team is full of versatile forwards with strong rebounding skills, something that helped them lead the league in rebounding last season.

Cannon played in all 34 regular season games for the Phoenix Mercury during the 2017 WNBA season and averaged 4.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. She played at Central Florida from 2007-2010 and averaged 13.0 point and 10.1 rebounds over 89 games. Cannon played her senior season at Southern Florida where she averaged 15.7 points and 12.1 per game.

Now overseas, Cannon is playing in the Polish league for Arka Gdynia where she is averaging 18.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, both fourth in the league.

Cannon will be a player to watch in training camp, especially how her scoring success overseas translates as she returns for her second WNBA season. Though she scored 20.0 point per game when she played for Chevakata, leading the Russian League in 2017, she scored just 4.4 points with the Mercury that season.

Expanding her skillset and limiting her tendency to commit fouls will help her succeed in training camp. She averaged just 0.3 assists per game while with the Mercury and adding getting her teammates involved to her list of strengths could add to her chances of sticking around in Uncasville. Cannon will also need to be careful of how physically she plays. Despite playing just 12.9 minutes per game with the Mercury, she averaged 2.1 fouls per game. That style of play does fit in with the Sun, who had the second most fouls in the league last season.

Between recent signings and the draft, there is a lot to look forward to once training camp starts.
