The Dallas Wings have signed guard Leticia Romero and waived second-year guard Saniya Chong, the team announced Thursday.

“We felt we needed more production from our bench,“ Wings president Greg Bibb said in a team release. “Leticia is a young guard with international experience who we expect will provide quality minutes in support of our starters once acclimated to our system.”

The Wings have swapped one young point guard for another. Romero was drafted by the Connecticut Sun with the 16th overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft. Romero did not play in the WNBA last season as she fulfilled her commitment to prepare and compete with the Spanish National Team.

Chong, the 26th overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft, had been serving as the primary backup to All-WNBA point guard Skylar Diggins-Smith. The Wings elected to carry just two point guards coming out of training camp. Kaela Davis has been called on early in the 2018 season to bring the ball up more often and create with Diggins-Smith and Liz Cambage on the bench.

The Wings scored 93 points per 100 possessions last season with Chong on the floor, 11 points below their season-long mark. She averaged 8.5 minutes per game in the first five games of the 2018 season.

Romero logged 10 minutes in the 2018 preseason with the Sun. After a 2-3 start to the season, the Wings play just twice in a 13 day stretch and will play five of their next seven games at home. The days off and home-heavy slate in early June figures to give the team as good a window as possible in a compressed season to get Romero acclimated.

The Wings play next on Saturday at home against the Seattle Storm (8 PM ET, League Pass).
