Indiana Fever re-sign Erica Wheeler

The Indiana Fever have re-signed reserved free agent guard Erica Wheeler.

The Fever announced the signing on Monday. The third year guard appeared in all 34 games for the Fever and drew 26 starts. The Fever also made one move last week, acquiring Kayla Alexander in a trade with the Las Vegas Aces.
The Fever lost three critical players to season-ending injury last season: starting wing Shenise Johnson (ACL), guard Tiffany Mitchell and starting point guard Briann January.
Wheeler filled in as the team’s starter at the point down the stretch, highlighted by a 33 point explosion August 8 against the Liberty. Wheeler, an undrafted free agent in 2015, spent time with Atlanta and New York as a rookie. She got a training camp invite from Indiana in 2016 and went on to make the final roster.
“Erica has continued to grow her game and was a key contributor to our team last year,” said Fever head coach and general manager Pokey Chatman in Monday’s release. “She brings an infectious enthusiasm, works tirelessly and is a great teammate. I am confident she will be even more productive moving forward.”
The Fever now have nine players under contract for 2018. The Fever have yet to re-sign core player Candice Dupree. Shenise Johnson, Jeanette Pohlen-Mavunga and Jennie Simms remain unrestricted free agents, meaning they can sign with any WNBA team of their choosing.

Wheeler was a reserved player, meaning the Fever had exclusive negotiating rights with her. Jennifer Hamson is also a reserved player for the Fever.
