We are no stranger to this week’s Big 12 Conference honorees. Ariel Atkins, a senior guard at Texas, was named player of the week for her standout performances against TCU and Kansas this past week. Iowa State’s Madison Wise picked up the freshman of the week honor, for the second time this season.

More from High Post Hoops

Atkins averaged 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 steals, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 blocks to gain this week’s accolades. Talk about an active player on both ends of the floor. In both games, she led her team in points, rebounds and steals.  The Longhorn senior shot 60.7 percent (17-28) from the field and 90 percent (9-10) from the charity strip. Atkins hit a clutch shot to extend the game into overtime against TCU, and ended the game with 25 points. She also put up 22 in the win over Kansas. It marks the second consecutive week in which a Texas player has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, as junior guard Lashann Higgs was last week’s Big 12 Player of the Week.

Madison Wise averaged 11.0 pints, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists to pick up the freshman of the week honor. Wise led Iowa State with 17 points in the Cyclones victory at Texas Tech. She connected on 7-of-13 (53.8%) from the field and grabbed five rebounds, four of which were crucial offensive rebounds, against the Lady Raiders. In the Cyclones game against Kansas State, Wise netted five points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished a career-high four assists. Wise is one of just two Big 12 freshmen to win multiple weekly awards this season.

This past week in the Big 12 featured many upsets. TCU picked up back-to-back top 25 wins for the first time since 2004 with the 79-77 victory over then-ranked No.7 Texas and 76-74 overtime win at No.15 West Virginia. Additionally, K-State collected an 80-64 win over then-ranked No.20 Oklahoma State.
