Lashann Higgs has been dialing up her production since league play began. Her athleticism and quickness really make her hard to defend. The junior guard averaged 28.0 points in 30.5 minutes, as the Longhorns collected victories over No. 20 Oklahoma State and Kansas State last week. Higgs scored 18 of her career-high 30 points in second half to lead the comeback against OSU. She led UT with a game-high 26 points in the win at K-State on Sunday.
With Texas trailing in the games against both Oklahoma State and Kansas State, Higgs led the comeback and then scored the go-ahead points in both of those games to give the Longhorns leads that they were able to hold on to until the clock hit four zeros. In the game against Oklahoma State, the Longhorns trailed nearly the entire game before Higgs’ free throw with 2:35 left. Lashann Higgs has also been named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Much of the lead that Oklahoma State had was a thanks to the freshman of the week, Braxtin Miller. She averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 steals, as the Cowgirls went 1-1 last week. The freshman boasted a season-high 23 points in the loss at Texas. She helped the Cowgirls with 14 points in the win over Oklahoma, snapping a three-game losing streak against their in-state rival.
These teams will meet again later on down the road. Miller and the 20th-ranked Cowgirls will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Manhattan, KS, to take on Kansas State at 1 p.m. Wednesday night No. 7 Texas is will pay a visit to Fort Worth, TX to take on TCU at 8pm. Be sure to check up on Summitt Hoops as we will have coverage of that game.
