Texas Tech fires head coach Candi Whitaker

Candi Whitaker has been relieved of her duties as the Texas Tech women’s basketball coach. Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt announced Monday afternoon that Shimmy Gray-Miller will serve as interim head coach.

Whitaker was in her fifth season leading the team with a record of 54-82,13-61 in Big 12 play. Whitaker played for Tech from 2000 to 2002 and was the first former Raider to lead the team. In 2015, she signed a five year contract extension after she was able to bring some high profile players to Lubbock. In a previous interview Whitaker said, “There is a process to rebuilding. We are proud of the progress we have shown and are so excited about the future.”
After their 97-49 loss at No.6 Baylor, Texas Tech have decided to go in a different direction. Shimmy Gray-Miller joined the program before this season as an assistant coach. Before Lubbock, she spent two years as an assistant coach at the University of Florida. She has 17 years of coaching experience and has been an assistant coach at universities in three of the Power Five conferences. During her career, she has helped her teams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances including one Sweet 16 appearance.
The Lady raiders are set to take on Kansas Wednesday night at the USA.
