Remember in week one, when I said know the name Bridget Carleton? Well, here she is again putting up numbers to claim her second player of the week honor this season. Carleton averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals last week to help the Cyclones try and overcome some tough battles. In the thrilling game against Vanderbilt, the junior scored a game high 30 points. That would mark the fourth time in her career that she reached the 30-point plateau.
Loryn Goodwin, a senior guard at Oklahoma State, joined Carleton in the player of the week honors. Goodwin averaged 24.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.5 steals as the Cowgirls went 1-1 for the week. In their win against Southern, Goodwin posted 13 points and 7 rebounds. She was able to rise to the occasion in the challenge against No. 6 Mississippi State by recording a game high 35 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. That was good for her first double-double of the season.
Iowa State found itself on the award list again, thanks to the Big 12 freshman of the week Madison Wise. Wise boasted 11.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and shot 53.3 percent from the field for the week. She scored 14 points and grabbed 3 rebounds at Vanderbilt.
The Big 12 split the BIG 12/SEC challenge with a 5-5 mark. Although it was even in the win column, the Big 12 won both of its top 25 matchups as No. 9 Baylor defeated No. 20/22 Kentucky, 90-63 and No. 11/12 West Virginia collected a 70-56 win at No. 18/21 Texas A&M.
TCU was victorious over Alabama with a score of 88-67. Kansas found their way to a 7-0 mark with the 71-60 win over Arkansas and No. 2/4 Texas rounded it out after they toppled Georgia, 81-53.
The league overall
The Big 12 has always been a competitive league. Fifty percent of teams are ranked or receiving votes in one of the national polls. This weekend’s challenge was a good test as the Big 12 is tied with the SEC with a nation leading 75% winning percentage through the first four weeks of the season. Thats a thanks to the Big 12’s scoring offense of 78.6 points per game, which leads the nation.
We are getting close to conference time, which kicks off at the end of December. A lot of these teams are seeing what they are made of before they have to battle it out against each other. Stay tuned!
