South Carolina’s Wilson and Ole Miss’ Taylor get nod for SEC weekly honors
In the first addition of the SEC women’s basketball weekly awards for the 2017-18 season, South Carolina forward A’ja Wilson was named Player of the Week and Ole Miss forward Promise Taylor was named Freshman of the Week. The award is Wilson’s seventh weekly SEC honor of her career; Taylor’s is her first.

Wilson began the season, the last of her collegiate career, by securing a double-double against Alabama State in just 14 minutes; she also had three blocks. South Carolina won that game 99-31. She followed that up with a career day on national television, scoring a career-high 32 points as the Gamecocks took down #15/13 Maryland in College Park, Maryland by a score of 94-86. In addition to her 32 points, Wilson also hauled in 12 rebounds and handed out three assists. For the week Wilson averaged 24 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 3.0 apg and 3.5 bpg while going 15-of-28 (.536) from the field and 18-of-24 (.750) from the line.
For Ole Miss, Taylor rushed onto the college scene, scoring double digits in her first two games as a Rebel. Against Northwestern State, a 75-44 win, Taylor went 5-of-6 from the field in route to scoring 13 points. She followed up that display with an even more impressive 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting as Ole Miss took down Kennesaw State 92-63. She also had five blocks against Kennesaw State. She averaged 16.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 0.5 apg and 3.5 bpg on the week.
