Tis the season of college hoops. With a new season, comes more awards. On Tuesday, the Big 12 announced their outstanding players for week one.

More from High Post Hoops

Bridget Carleton, a junior guard from Iowa State, claimed the Big 12 player of the week. She scored 19 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter to help the Cyclones come out on top in a 81-76 thriller with South Dakota. In addition to her scoring, Carleton tallied 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

It is no surprise that Bridget Carleton is stepping up early for the Cyclones. Being an upperclassmen with the most experience, much of the load this season will be upon her shoulders. She was named  Big 12 Preseason honorable mention after finishing last season averaging 15 points per game and 6 rebounds per game, in 33 minutes.

Carleton was also recently named to the Cheryl Miller Award Preseason List, which honors the nation’s top small forward. She was one of just 20 player in the country to make the season’s first list.

The Big 12 also recognized Oklahoma’s Mandy Simpson as the freshman of the week. In her debut as a Sooner, Simpson reeled in 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in just 28 minutes. The Boise, Idaho native finished 4-6 from the field and also the free-throw line. She became the 10th true freshman to start a season opener under Sherri Coale. The Sooners went on the beat Belmont 96-73.

These two will be making noise all season long, so remember the names.
