Tuesday looked to be a relatively slow news day around the WNBA, save for the previews and practice quotes coming from Williams Arena as the Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks prep for Game 5 of the 2017 WNBA Finals.

Turns out we have some big news elsewhere.

The Seattle Storm have decided who their next head coach will be, per Doug Feinberg of the Associated Press.

Dan Hughes, per Feinberg’s report, will be the next head coach for the Storm.

Seattle was defeated in the 2017 WNBA playoffs by the Phoenix Mercury in a first round single elimination match up.

As of Tuesday night, the Storm have not yet officially announced the move. The Associated Press report cited anonymous sources close to the situation.

Hughes most recently coached the San Antonio Stars and retired following the 2016 season. Hughes is one of the most decorated coaches in WNBA history — his 237 wins are the third most all-time.

Hughes will replace interim head coach Gary Kloppenburg, who stepped in to lead the Storm down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs. Kloppenburg was elevated to the interim role after the Storm fired Jenny Boucek in August.

Hughes takes on a roster led by the WNBA’s all-time assists leader, Sue Bird. Bird confirmed that she would return for the 2018 WNBA season after Seattle’s first round playoff exit. Seattle’s roster is also headlined by the young, dynamic star duo of Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd.

Stay tuned for an official announcement from the Storm and for the rest of Seattle’s offseason moves.
