Charles, Parker named WNBA Players of the Month

NEW YORK, Sept. 5, 2017 – Tina Charles of the New York Liberty and Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks snag Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month, respectively, for the final month of the 2017 regular season.

Tina Charles

For the month, Charles ranked first among Eastern Conference players in scoring (18.1 per game), third in rebounds (8.3 per game) and sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.385).  Charles posted double figures in all 12 games, including five games with at least 20 points. She grabbed seven or more rebounds in 11 of 12 games in the final month of the regular season.

This is the second-consecutive POM award for Charles and the 11th of her eight-year career.  Charles was also named Player of the Week earlier today, her 28th career POW honor.

Highlights of the month:

  • August 18 vs. Connecticut: 24 points and seven rebounds in an 82-70 win.
  • Aug. 20 vs. Minnesota: Scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a 70-61 win over the Lynx.
  • September 3 vs Dallas: Concluded the regular season with 18 points and 18 rebounds in an 82-81 road victory.

Candace Parker

Parker led the Sparks past the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx twice in the final month of the season.  The reigning WNBA Finals MVP posted 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 70-64 win over the Lynx on Aug. 11.  She notched a game-high 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the 78-67 win over Minnesota on August 27.

She ranked sixth among Western Conference players with 18.5 points per game. Parker also averaged 8.1 rebounds (fourth in the West),1.55 steals and 1.1 blocked shots per game.

Parker helped the Los Angeles Sparks to a 9-2 record in the last 11 games of the season. The Sparks finished with a 26-8 and the second seed looking to defend their 2016 title.

Highlights of the month:

  • Aug. 18 at Chicago: Scored 29 points and added 12 rebounds and six assists in a 115-106 double-overtime win over the Sky.
  • August 27 vs Minnesota: Notched a game-high 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the 78-67 win.
  • Sept. 3 vs. Connecticut: Recorded 12 points, 14 rebounds and four assists in an 81-70 victory over the Sun.
