The injury occurred during a practice last week, resulting in torn cartilage and a bone bruise in her right knee. The Fever have played just once since then — a 100-80 loss to the Washington Mystics — and Mitchell did not appear in that game.
Though Mitchell had been slumping from the field, shooting just 8-32 over her last four games, she had made noticeable steps forward from her rookie to sophomore seasons. In 2017, she scored in double figures 16 times and averaged 10.3 points per game to go with 3.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists. She was also shooting 92 percent from the foul line and had made 24 in a row from the stripe before her injury. That’s coming off a 2016 season in which she set the franchise record for free throw percentage for a rookie.
Mitchell is expected to return for the 2018 season, though both surgical and rehab options are still be explored, according to the Fever.
At just 9-19, the Fever are not headed to the playoffs and have six games remaining in their season. Their next game will be Friday night in Minnesota.
