The league announced on Tuesday that Tina Charles from the New York Liberty and Sylvia Fowles from the Minnesota Lynx have been named players of the month in the Eastern and Western conferences respectively. Charles has now won the award a record 10 times, while Fowles is second on the all-time list with eight Player of the Month honors.
Fowles has now been Player of the Month in the Western Conference all three months this season.
Though the Liberty went just 5-4 in July, they have now won four out of five behind Charles’ leadership. She averaged a conference-high 22.2 points per game for the month, with a WNBA-high 12.9 rebounds. Charles also recorded five double-doubles in July.
As for Fowles, she has been her usual dominant self, posting 21.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game in July, and leading the Lynx to a 7-1 record. Fowles posted four double-doubles in July and had three-or-more blocks four times.
Other Player of the Month candidates include Allie Quigley (Chicago), Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas (Connecticut), Skylar Diggins-Smith (Dallas), Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker (Los Angeles), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix), Breanna Stewart (Seattle), and Elena Delle Donne (Washington).
