Young star could quickly thrive in Dallas—if the Wings can fix one detrimental issue

The 2026 WNBA draft is, unfortunately, still a big mystery. No one is quite sure when it will take place or who the number one pick will be. Once the WNBA and the WNBPA finally agree on a new CBA, the former will be decided. The top pick will come down to a key Wings decision and nothing else: Do they draft a big to pair with Paige Bueckers, or do they bring Azzi Fudd to Dallas?

If the Wings want to draft a big, Awa Fam seems like the obvious choice. She is younger than Lauren Betts, has experience playing professionally in Europe, and promises to grow into one of the most versatile young bigs in the W sooner rather than later.

Fam could thrive in Dallas—if the Wings address one of their biggest weaknesses. The 19-year-old will have to be surrounded by good 3-point shooters and off-ball cutters to blossom in the WNBA, so she can have enough space to work in the paint, where she is an incredibly efficient scorer, and the team can capitalize off her ability to make plays out of the post. The Wings were not a great 3-point shooting team last season, which is an issue they need to address either way, but especially if they draft Fam.

The Wings struggled from three last season

2025 revealed few of the Wings’ strengths and many of their weaknesses. 3-point shooting was one of those weaknesses. As a team, the Wings shot 30.4% for the season. Only the Connecticut Sun finished with a worse percentage.

Two Wings players shot better than 35% from three. Li Yueru converted 35.3% of her 2.3 attempts per game, and JJ Quinerly sank nearly 39% of her 1.6 attempts. Arike Ogunbowale, Luisa Geiselsöder, Paige Bueckers, and Maddy Siegrist all averaged at least three attempts from long range. They all shot between 30.4 and 33.1%.

That lack of reliable volume shooters is why Azzi Fudd is such an interesting prospect for the Wings. She shot a career-best 44.1% on 6.6 attempts per game over the first 23 games of this season. At the same time, however, the traditional formulafor a championship contender has been to draft a guard and a big with consecutive top picks, not two guards. Ironically, drafting a big, like Fam or Betts, would only increase the Wings’ need for 3-point shooting. The Wings also don’t have any other first-round picks or even a second-round pick to select a 3-point specialist later in the draft.
