Indiana Fever fans love Kelsey Mitchell, and a lot of WNBA fans know she's great, even if they aren't rooting for the Fever this season. But it's possible, perhaps even probable, that the season she's having is going a little under the radar — mostly because a lot of players are also having excellent seasons this year. But Mitchell is very nearly in a class all of her own right now, and it's worth paying attention to.

The Fever lost their Thursday game against the Dallas Wings, but Mitchell still managed to put on a show. She racked up an enormous 37 points in the match, which was also the 21st consecutive game in which she scored at least 20 points. Mitchell was by and large the big scorer for the Fever — Aliyah Boston had 14 points, Caitlin Clark had 10, and Makayla Timpson ended the night with 11.

A win would have allowed the Fever to cement their playoffs berth, but the team will instead need to focus on their next game against the New York Liberty (the team will head to Brooklyn on Saturday).

Kelsey Mitchell broke A'ja Wilson's record

Last night's performance was also significant because Mitchell bested a record previously held by 4-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson. Before last night, Wilson boasted a 20-game, 20+ point streak established across two seasons (2023 and 2024). Mitchell has recorded her 20+ point games in the same 2026 season.

In fact, to find out when the last time Mitchell didn't score at least 20 points, one would need to flip the calendar back to June 2026. That was when the Fever suffered a 113-96 loss to the Atlanta Dream on June 20.

Unsurprisingly, this season is so far a career-best for Mitchell — and it's well past time for fans of women's basketball to take note. Mitchell, who was drafted as the No. 2 overall pick by the Fever in 2018, has spent her entire professional career at Indiana. She's been the team's leader through coaching changes and tough seasons. It may surprise some fans, but the Fever hasn't always been an especiailly dominant team, and drafting Mitchell was part of the team's longterm vision for the future.

Now that future is becoming the team's present, and Mitchell is truly coming into her own. The Fever are having a very strong season — they're currently fourth in the league with 24 wins and 13 losses — and Mitchell has been a huge part of the reason why.
