Alanna Smith's injury-riddled FIBA World Cup campaign is officially over. The Australian national team will be without its star forward for the remainder of the tournament as she prioritises rehabilitation for a lower-leg injury, Basketball Australia announced. This is not just a major blow for the Opals; the Dallas Wings will be sweating on Smith's fitness as the postseason swiftly approaches.

Australia claimed an impressive 70-54 victory over Puerto Rico in their opening game of the tournament. Despite the win, the fixture was marred by Alanna Smith's second-quarter exit due to a lower-leg injury.

This will be a devastating loss for a national team with ambitions of a deep push in the competition's knockout stages. Reports have yet to confirm the severity of the injury; however, it could be the Dallas Wings that suffer most from this announcement.

Dallas requires Smith's improved defensive performances in the playoffs

The Dallas Wings have been a much-improved outfit this year under head coach Jose Fernandez's tutelage. Paige Bueckers, Jessica Shepard, and Azzi Fudd have all excelled as the Wings have secured their playoff berth. Nevertheless, Dallas' offensive brilliance has been accompanied by several ugly defensive showings.

Even though the Wings currently hold the eighth spot in the regular-season standings, it has not been thanks to their defensive efforts. Dallas has conceded 80+ points on 26 occasions this season, and 100+ points three times. As they say, championships are built on defense, and this team frankly isn't good enough in that specific area.

Before the season began, Dallas' defensive frailties were a topic for discussion, which is why Smith's signing seemed an astute piece of business by the franchise. Unfortunately, for the majority of the season, Smith failed to replicate the form that made her such a formidable presence for the Minnesota Lynx just 12 months earlier.

In the weeks leading up to the FIBA World Cup, fortunes changed, and so did Alanna Smith's performances, creating optimism that the Dallas Wings could address their biggest flaw heading into the postseason. Alongside Awak Kuier, Smith played a significant role in Dallas' four-game win streak.

Coming out of the international break, Jose Fernandez would have been expecting to have an opportunity to build momentum and create defensive cohesion critical to any form of playoff success for the franchise. However, with no confirmation of how severe Alanna Smith's injury is, the Dallas Wings will have little chance of solving their biggest issue.
