Wings' DiJonai Carrington trade turns page on a failed mission

This season did not go as planned.

When the Dallas Wings put this team together, they had higher hopes than what's actually transpired this season. They put an entirely new group together with vets who could help the rookies they've added grow quickly. There's no doubt that Indiana's success last season in Caitlin Clark's first year was an inspiration for their offseason aggressiveness on the market, but everything has collapsed.

The Fever started slow last year, just like the Wings did this season, so that part wasn't strange. But things began to look up after the team went 5-2 in a seven-game stretch at the end of June. Since then, the team hasn't had any semblance of consistency, and now they sit in 11th place with an 8-21 record. With 15 games left to go, this move is a punt on the season and an admission of failure.

Diamond Miller hasn't had much of a chance to make an impact on the Minnesota Lynx. Their roster is just filled with veterans, and winning a championship is their goal. In Dallas, Miller should have a chance to get on the floor and up her 10 minutes a game to something more reasonable for her development. That could end up being great for Paige Bueckers.

The Wings must carefully craft their team around Paige Bueckers'

Bueckers is a mid-range master, but the Wings aren't a great shooting team right now. Diamond shoots the three ball at a 54% clip. Having a sniper like that on the floor will make it much harder for teams to double-team Paige and crowd the paint.

Dallas' outside woes were never more apparent than they were in their recent loss to a Caitlin Clark-less Fever team. They went 2-15 while allowing Indiana to shoot 12-28. You're not going to win many games like that in a professional league. Miller could help solve that issue, and she's under contract for next season, too. Carrington is set to hit free agency at the conclusion of the current campaign.

I don't envision Karlie Samuelson remaining on the roster past this season, either, but that's okay. The draft is coming, and the Wings will be hoping the ping pong balls roll in their favor. UCLA's 6'7" center Lauren Betts is the grand prize, but let's say they don't get that pick.

The WNBA Draft Room has a mock draft available that projects the Wings will land at number four and select Awa Fam out of Spain. Fam is a 6'4" dynamo who can catch the ball in traffic, finish with both hands, anchor the defense, and knock down the occasional three. She doesn't shoot them often, but can I interest you in 42% from deep? It would address three issues: defense, rebounding, and shooting.

If they pull that off, Dallas will have a good young core they can build around. Wings fans may be frustrated right now, but Curt Miller's decision to make this move proves that at least he's trying to make the right moves. Whether it works out or not remains to be seen, but what fans want the most out of their team's president is effort. That part is there.
