Regardless of their postseason woes, the Dallas Wings had a remarkable season. Few people could have predicted the franchise would make a spectacular leap from the depths of the WNBA to a playoff berth. Nevertheless, in the dying moments of the season, the team wasn't resilient enough -- especially without Azzi Fudd on the floor. To go one step further next year, Dallas must improve their defensive guard depth, which is why a reunion with DiJonai Carrington makes perfect sense.
No franchise wants to crash out in the First Round of the WNBA playoffs, but the Wings have still had a fantastic season. Paige Bueckers and her teammates consistently proved they could go toe-to-toe with any opponent offensively, but on the other end of the floor, Dallas failed to put up much of a fight.
When healthy, Azzi Fudd validated Dallas' selection of the former UConn star with the 2026 first overall draft pick. Fudd averaged 13.1 points and 1.7 steals per game, while shooting 39.7% from deep.
As expected, the rookie established herself as Bueckers' perfect partner by allowing her colleague to be the team's primary ball handler, while concentrating on defensive stability and spot-up shooting.
However, when Fudd was ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure to address her right knee soreness, Dallas' two-way balance became skewed. From that point onwards, the franchise's chances of making a deep postseason run were limited. To make the next step in their development, the Wings' front office must acquire a capable defensive backup.
Adding DiJonai Carrington would be the perfect move for Dallas
Organisations will be desperate to secure DiJonai Carrington's signature as she becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Re-signing with the franchise that traded her to the Minnesota Lynx just over 12 months ago could be a sticking point, but if she is willing to embrace a new coach, new system, and a more defined role on the roster, Carrington would be the perfect addition for Dallas.
During her time in Dallas, Carrington contributed positively despite the team's struggles. The Baylor alum averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. As a secondary option, Carrington records impressive numbers, but they don't show her hustle, physicality, and ability to force turnovers.
Acquiring Carrington wouldn't entirely fill the void Azzi Fudd's absence creates. From 3-point range, the former Wings guard isn't as prolific as her potential teammate. Throughout her career, Carrington has averaged 2 shots from deep per game at a 29.2% success rate.
Carrington's defensive versatility would also give Jose Fernandez the option to field the 2024 All-WNBA Defensive First-Team selectee and Fudd at the same time. A smaller lineup with stronger foundations would provide the Wings with improved floor spacing, allowing Paige Bueckers to wreak havoc on her opponent from deep.
Despite the 3-point limitations, DiJonai Carrington is the exact player profile the Dallas Wings are desperate to sign. Jose Fernandez's team requires backcourt depth, specifically to address their defensive frailties when Azzi Fudd isn't on the court. Dallas boasts significant roster talent, but it still requires a few small tweaks to catapult them to the next level.
