Unrivaled’s inaugural season is one of the main events of the 2025 WNBA offseason. The new 3-on-3 women’s basketball league will feature several of the WNBA’s best players as well as a much-anticipated 1v1 tournament. It is a chance for players to make money and work on their game without having to go overseas. For WNAB fans, it marks an opportunity to see most of their favorite players compete against each other during the offseason.
Unrivaled’s first game will tip off on January 17 on TNT, and there will be plenty to watch for New York Liberty fans. Breanna Stewart, who co-founded the league with Napheesa Collier, Sabrina Ionescu, and Courtney Vandersloot are all suiting up for Unvrivaled this season.
Stewart and Vandersloot will join forces on the Mist Basketball Club alongside DiJonai Carrington, Jewell Loyd, Aaliyah Edwards, and Rickea Jackson. Ionescu, who was the final player announced, will play for the Phantom Basketball Club, joining Satou Sabally, Marina Mabrey, Brittney Griner, Katie Lou Samuelson, and Natasha Cloud.
Both teams could find great success
The Mist are considered one of the early favorites to win it all in Unrivaled’s first season. After all, Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd already led the Seattle Storm to championships together. On top of that, they will have a stable ballhandler, one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, and a promising young big.
The Phantom should not be counted out, however. Brittney Griner will be difficult to deal with in the paint, especially with all the space the Phantom will be able to create around her. Besides, Marina Mabrey and Natasha Cloud are both competitive two-way players, and all WNBA fans know how Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally can explode offensively.
Particularly Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu could also find great success in the 1v1 tournament in February. Few players in the WNBA can stop Stewart—she was the league’s MVP in 2023 for a reason—and it will not be any different in Unrivaled. Players like Napheesa Collier and Alyssa Thomas will be able to give Stewart trouble, but that does not necessarily mean they can stop her from winning. Ionescu has claimed the reputation of one of the best guards in the WNBA recently, and her ability to make contested threes will be a valuable asset in the 1v1 tournament.
