The Vanderbilt Commodores added another victory to the team's belt Monday when they managed a 72-69 win over Michigan during the Coretta Scott King Classic. Both games played at the Prudential Center were nail-biters (Ohio State narrowly beat TCU 71-69), and Vanderbilt owes the team's victory in large part due to work freshman Aubrey Galvan did on the court.
Galvan has so far proven to be an exciting addition to the team's roster, and is fond of no-look passes that seem impossible and taking three point shots from Caitlin Clark-esque ranges. Galvan scored a game-high and career-high 20 points Monday, which included an especially clutch three point shot in the fourth quarter that gave the Commodores a seven-point lead they desperately needed.
In addition to the effort waged by Galvan, Justine Pissott and Mikayla Blakes, who are both originally from New Jersey, combined for 28 points. Pissott had 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds, and Blakes added on 14 points of her own, which has extended her double-digit scoring streak to 38 games.
Vanderbilt believed in Aubrey Galvan before other programs did
Vanderbilt happily welcomed Galvan ahead of the 2025-26 season. In addition to Clark, Galvan has also drawn comparisons to former Kentucky star Georgia Amoore (who was drafted as the No. 6 overall pick by the Washington Mystics in the 2025 WNBA Draft but tore her ACL before the regular season could begin). Though the 5'6" Galvan is on the smaller side, she's proving game by game that she has what it takes to be a serious threat in the SEC.
Galvan is one of three freshmen on the roster at Vanderbilt this season (the team is also home to Monique Williams and Ava Black), but is the only one who sees significant minutes and is clearly counted upon game after game. She's currently averaging 11.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 3.1 steals in 32.7 minutes of play, the kind of foundation that indicates she will have plenty to keep building on as her collegiate career progresses.
The Commodores have an impressive win streak
The win boosted the Commodores' winning streak to 19-0, which is the second-longest active streak in NCAA Division I history.
The third quarter of the game was a little perilous for the Commodores, as the team saw their impressive lead cut down by a determined Michigan squad. Michigan managed to score eight of the first ten points of the fourth quarter, which ultimately spurred the Commodores to rally and win the game.
