A UConn reunion is brewing in Dallas, but it might not be the one you'd expect. The Dallas Wings recently signed guard Christyn Williams to a hardship contract, a move that could set the stage for a compelling reunion with her former teammate, Paige Bueckers. While the immediate goal is to bolster the roster, this signing opens the door for a familiar on-court connection to emerge for Bueckers and Williams.

A storied time together at UConn

Williams and Bueckers were teammates for two seasons at the University of Connecticut, where they formed a formidable backcourt for the Huskies. Their time together was defined by deep tournament runs, including two Final Fours and a National Championship appearance. They also showcased their individual strengths that made them a dynamic duo.

Williams, a four-year starter, was known for her scoring ability and defensive intensity, averaging 14.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists for her career while amassing 156 steals. Bueckers, on the other hand, captivated fans with her exceptional court vision, clutch performances, and the ability to elevate her teammates' play, capped off by a National Championship in 2025.

Potential Impact on the Dallas Wings

The potential reunion of Williams and Bueckers in the WNBA is an exciting prospect for UConn fans and could be a strategic one for the Wings. The chemistry they developed in Storrs could be an asset on the court. Beyond basketball, having a familiar face like Williams around could be a welcome comfort for Bueckers, especially as the Wings have navigated a difficult season marked by injuries and unmet expectations. The prospect of these former Huskies sharing the court again is an exciting storyline to watch as the WNBA season winds down.

The future of the Wings will be different

In a season so far marked by inconsistency and a challenging record, Paige Bueckers has been the singular, unwavering force for Dallas. The rookie has not just met the hype, she's exceeded it. As of early July, she is averaging 18.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists, cementing herself as a rookie All-Star starter. Her ability to score efficiently, create for others, and impact the game has instantly established her as the foundation of the Wings.

When it comes to next season, Dallas faces its most defining decision with Arike Ogunbowale. A four-time All-Star and prolific scorer, she has been the Wings' consistent offensive engine, but her contract expires after 2025.

This presents a lot of questions about how the Wings will build going forward — and it might just be time to fully commit to building for Bueckers. Moving on from Ogunbowale would free up crucial cap space to build through free agency and the draft. Dallas is a booming sports market, with the Mavericks and top pick Cooper Flagg next door, creating an exciting basketball environment.
