The FIBA World Cup has finished, the United States won the gold medal, and now it's time for WNBA players to get back to work and finish the regular season. That includes Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark, who will help power the Indiana Fever toward the playoffs this year.
Though the Fever are in the playoffs, their exact seeding hasn't been locked in yet. The team doesn't have the easiest four-game schedule ahead of them. They are likely to win their September 18 match against the Toronto Tempo, but then will face the Washington Mystics on September 20 before closing out their season with back-to-back games against the Minnesota Lynx on September 22 and September 24.
Any and all wins will help boost the Fever in the standings and, therefore, positively impact their seeding. But a bottom three finish will still see the team playing either the Lynx, the Golden State Valkyries, or the Las Vegas Aces first — and any of those games will pose formidable challenges to Indiana.
The Fever are also being aggressively pursued by the New York Liberty. The 2024 WNBA Champions have found themselves ranked near the bottom of the playoff picture. That doesn't necessarily mean they won't make a significant push, but it does mean they have to fight more aggressively at the end of the season to set themselves up for success in the first round. The Liberty will play the Lynx on September 18 before they meet the Toronto Tempo on September 20 and then close out the season with back-to-back games against the Atlanta Dream on September 21 and September 23.
Kelsey Mitchell deserves attention right now
The Fever's final four games may also provide Kelsey Mitchell with the opportunity to break A'ja Wilson's record for the most points scored in a single season. Mitchell is currently only 20 points shy of the 1,021 Wilson scored in 2024. She's also been scoring at least 20 points per game for most of the WNBA season, so this record is likely one she'll not only meet but potentially decimate. She is currently averaging 25 points per game. It should be noted that Wilson is also on track to crush her own record, and she and Mitchell may find themselves in a race for it.
The 2026 season has been an enormously successful one for Mitchell, and many consider her a 2026 MVP candidate. Wilson, who has won the award four times, is a clear favorite, and so is the Lynx's rookie Olivia Miles.
