The Aces face an uphill battle this season: where does Las Vegas go from here?

There are no clear answers for the former championship team

The Aces are, to be frank, going through it right now. The team is currently sitting on 4 wins and 3 losses and is hardly the worst team in the league — in fact, they are far from it — but they also aren't playing like, well, themselves. And to make matters worse, there doesn't seem to be any solution but to plow straight through the muck and hope that there's something waiting for them on the other side.

June is an interesting time in the WNBA season because it's when the Commissioner's Cup takes place, and the annual event historically offers more than a glimpse at who we can expect to see in the WNBA Finals. It's not an exact science, but in the last four seasons, five of the eight teams that make it to the Cup championship game show up again in the Finals at the end of the season.

That's a reality the Aces know all too well — they won the Cup in 2022 and the Finals the same season. But the 2025 Aces are struggling, individually and as a team.

A'ja Wilson is still dominant

It will take a lot more than a bad start to a season to slow down Wilson, a 3-time WNBA MVP and 2-time WNBA Champion. But Wilson can't win games all by herself, and the team's latest performances are raising real — and appropriate — questions about decisions the front office made during free agency this year.

Obviously, the loss of Kelsey Plum, who departed Las Vegas for Los Angeles, was always going to leave a gap that would be difficult to fill. Jewell Loyd joined the team from the Storm, and has had a solid start, but isn't yet performing at the level fans want to see and the team desperately needs. Loyd is currently averaging 10.6 points per game, a career low.

The team's offense is also in shambles, and the Aces are ranked number 8 in both offensive and defensive standings. And while there's still a lot of time left in the season, the team isn't performing like champions, or even like a team that has the potential to.

Where the Aces can go from here

The Aces have a few key problems: there is no viable center on the team, and both Loyd and Chelsea Gray aren't shooting remotely close to what they've done in the past.

The organization should also bring in a new GM, as the Aces have been playing this season without one since Natalie Williams' contract was not renewed in 2024. At the time, the team explained the organization was undergoing an overall restructuring of its front office, and Williams' was let go after the Aces were knocked out of championship contention by the Liberty.

But since then, there haven't been any apparent moves to replace Williams, something that could be contributing to the team's struggles on the court. Until the Aces figure out their next steps, things could get more dire, and that may have a ripple effect that goes further than they might think.
