The Connecticut Sun have endured a disappointing offseason, and now Marina Mabrey wants a change of scenery. Mabrey, who was acquired by the Sun in a 2024 mid-season trade with the Chicago Sky, has reportedly requested a trade, according to Alexa Philippou of ESPN.

The Sun have lost a number of star players to other teams this offseason. Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner are just a couple of players who are set to play elsewhere in 2025. Mabrey likely wants to join a contender, and Connecticut appears to be heading toward a rebuild.

The 28-year-old guard will surely draw plenty of trade interest following her request.

Marina Mabrey makes trade request

It goes without saying, but Mabrey's trade request is a potential difference-maker in the WNBA. She features the talent to drastically help a contender. She could turn a team with fairly high aspirations into a true championship contender.

Mabrey has played at the WNBA level since the 2019 season, as she made her debut in the league with the Las Vegas Aces. After only one season in Las Vegas, however, Mabrey joined the Dallas Wings in 2020. She would continue to improve in Dallas, where she spent three seasons.

Following the 2022 season, Mabrey joined the Sky. She spent all of 2023 in Chicago before getting traded to Connecticut during the 2024 campaign. And now, unless the Sun do not accept her request, Mabrey could be changing teams once again.

Mabrey is a respectable scoring guard. She averaged 14.4 points per outing across 40 total games with the Sun and Sky last season. She shot 41.3 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from beyond the arc while also recording 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.1 steals per contest.

Potential Mabrey trade destinations

Which teams could pursue Marina Mabrey in a trade?

Teams in need of another guard could reach out to Connecticut. A potential deal would also need to make sense from a financial standpoint, though. For example, the Los Angeles Sparks could try to acquire Mabrey, but with Kelsey Plum now on the roster alongside Dearica Hamby and Cameron Brink, adding Mabrey could prove to be a challenge.

The Atlanta Dream are seemingly trying to contend with their additions of Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones. The Dream could certainly inquire about Mabrey. A number of other teams may reach out to the Sun as well, but it remains to be seen which possible suitors will have serious interest in trading for Mabrey.
