Connecticut Sun fans were devastated when it was announced that the team would be sold and moved to Houston after this season to revive the Comets. The sale itself was not shocking. It had been in the making for a while. What bothers many fans is that there was an opportunity to sell the franchise to a different ownership group and move it to Boston, but the league pushed heavily for the Houston move.
Sun fans weren’t treated to many wins in their team’s sunset season. Connecticut won just 11 games all season long, including one final home win against the Toronto Tempo to close out the season. Beating the Tempo in their final home game was a great way to say goodbye to a dedicated fan base that deserved to see one more win.
However, it also evened out the lottery odds between Houston and Toronto. Houston was expected to have the best lottery odds in the 2027 WNBA Draft all season long, but this Sun win means they are now tied with the Tempo for the best chance to draft JuJu Watkins.
Watkins projects to be a franchise-altering pick. The Comets have huge shoes to fill considering what the first iteration of the franchise did, so losing out on Watkins would be heartbreaking. At the same time, it’s not even certain whether she will be available in next year’s draft.
Everyone wants to draft JuJu Watkins
Juju Watkins looked like one of the most complete two-way prospects the WNBA has seen in a long time during her first two seasons at USC. Then, she tore her ACL and missed her third season.
That injury doesn’t really affect how her WNBA potential is viewed. She is still expected to be a game-changer for whichever team drafts her. It does, however, change when she can enter the draft. She could leave USC after the 2026-27 season and be the consensus number-one pick, or she could return to college and strengthen a 2028 draft that is expected to feature Sarah Strong as the top prospect.
JuJu Watkins is the player everyone wants in this upcoming draft, but she’s not the only college star teams can pick. Madison Booker, Hannah Hidalgo, S’Mya Nichols, Mikaylah Williams, and MiLaysia Fulwiley are all expected to go in the first round. 7’3” Chinese teenager Zhang Ziyu would also be a fascinating pick for a franchise in need of size and an interior presence.
The Comets will get a great young talent to build around either way.
