The Seattle Storm announced a signing on Monday after trading center Li Yueru to the Dallas Wings on Saturday. The team has officially re-signed forward Mackenzie Holmes.
The Storm selected Holmes in the 2024 WNBA Draft. However, she did not play with the team during the '24 campaign due to an injury. She spent the 2025 preseason with Seattle before the Storm ultimately decided to move in a different direction.
Now, Holmes is set to receive another opportunity in Seattle.
Mackenzie Holmes returns to Storm
Holmes, 24, is a 6'3" forward with potential. She played her college basketball at Indiana, spending five seasons with the program. In the 2022-23 campaign, Holmes averaged 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per outing. She was already one of the better players in women's college basketball, but her 2022-23 performance cemented her status as a star.
Following another big season in 2023-24, Holmes entered the 2024 WNBA Draft. She surprisingly fell further in the draft than initially expected before getting selected by the Storm with the 26th overall pick. As mentioned, Holmes did not play in 2024 due to the aforementioned injury.
Holmes will likely make her WNBA debut soon -- with her debut set to come a year and a couple of months after getting selected in the draft.
Seattle's 2025 outlook as WNBA season moves forward
The Storm currently hold a 6-5 record. Seattle sits in third place in the Western Conference standings as a result. It has been an up and down campaign for the team, yet they still project to emerge as a true postseason contender.
With 2025 No. 2 overall pick Dominique Malonga on the roster, the Storm's long-term future is bright as well. Seattle may not contend for a championship in 2025, but perhaps the Storm can make serious noise in the playoffs within the next couple of years. This season, Seattle will still be a team to closely monitor. The Storm have enough talent to potentially surprise opponents in the playoffs.
Of course, the Storm are focused on the regular season at the moment. Seattle's next game is scheduled for Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Sparks on the road. The Storm will then play the Aces in Las Vegas on Friday before returning home to host the New York Liberty on Sunday night.
Mackenzie Holmes could make her regular season debut in the WNBA during Tuesday's contest.
