Tension and dysfunction are unfortunately becoming synonymous with the current era of the Chicago Sky, and Skylar Diggins is the latest figure involved in team drama. The disgruntled veteran point guard recently took to Instagram to express her dissatisfaction with her role on the team. “Now I’m coming off the bench????? Cool,” she wrote on an Instagram story in response to her losing her starting position as Courtney Vandersloot returns from injury.
It’s hard not to think back to just last year, when then-Sky star Angel Reese was seemingly unhappy with the team and was traded to Atlanta for relatively little this past offseason. It’s becoming a pattern for this team that Courtney Williams describes as a “poverty franchise” for its perceived poor treatment of players.
With Skylar Diggin unhappy, it seems beneficial to trade the veteran guard to a team with a bigger role for her. Her minutes could easily be redistributed to Chicago’s other vet point guards such as Vandersloot and Natasha Cloud. The Sky is finally actually making progress in their rebuild and it probably makes more sense to prioritize young talents like Sydney Taylor, Kamilla Cardoso, and Gabriela Jaquez.
Chicago’s loss could quickly become Washington’s gain.
The Mystics need a point guard and veteran presence
The Washington Mystics are a promising young team currently standing at 11-10 and just barely pacing to be in the playoffs. They have all the tools they need to start winning in terms of raw talent, including two second-year All-Stars in Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen, but aren’t fully able to capitalize on it with their underwhelming options at the point guard spot. A good point guard, as teams like Minnesota and Las Vegas prove, can elevate the entire roster and turn a middle-of-the-road team into a contender. Skylar Diggins would definitely get the starting role she desires over Georgia Amoore.
The Mystics are also incredibly young and completely lack any veteran presence whatsoever. 26-year-old Michaela Onyenwere is the oldest player on the roster. An experienced player like Diggins could be exactly what they need to ground them into a winning season.
Chicago could flip her for the various assets and picks Washington holds. Washington has plenty of draft picks, including a swap with the Sky in 2027. Since the Mystics have enough talent and need to start actually molding and pruning their roster into the shape of a winning lineup. They can surely put together a package that will appeal to the still-rebuilding Sky. At this point, Washington probably wouldn’t have to give up too much to get Diggins. As good a player as she is, she’s not on a cheap contract for her output at this point in her career, and the Angel Reese trade this year shows a precedent of underwhelming returns for disgruntled players.
