The Chicago Sky did Angel Reese a huge favor this summer by signing point guard Courtney Vandersloot to a one-year deal. The 36-year-old began her WNBA career with the Sky in 2011 and won a title with them in 2021.

Vandersloot returned to Chicago with another championship after the Liberty won the 2024 title. The Sky missed the playoffs last year, but they hope to flip the script in 2025. They're off to a good start, winning their first two preseason games.

Chicago is building around its two young stars: Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. The Sky's decision to reunite with Vandersloot, the team's all-time assists leader, will benefit both, especially Reese. Having a point guard like Vandersloot will help tremendously with their continued development.

Vandersloot's impact was felt immediately in Chicago's first preseason game against the Brazilian National Team. She found Reese for the first of her five assists in 16 minutes, which should be a common theme this season. The Sky added shooting with Rebecca Nurse and Kia Nurse over the offseason, which will help take some defensive pressure off Reese down low, making it easier for Vandersloot to find her for open looks.

One of Reese's goals for the 2025 season is to expand her offensive game outside of the paint, something Vandersloot said she's looking forward to helping with. First-time WNBA head coach Tyler Marsh said several times that the Sky want Reese not to spend as much time at the basket.

Reese admitted that her confidence isn't where it needs to be when knocking down outside shots, but that will blossom throughout the season. Again, she has one of the best point guards who will generate open looks for her. Reese is also expected to take on some playmaking duties, so she'll get some tips from Vandersloot in that department.

Chicago has a real chance to make some noise this season, starting with Reese. She learned a lot as a rookie, but admitted that she wasn't used to being on a struggling team. Reese said it's important not to let your mindset slip and get used to losing. The Sky don't want that, either. They brought in a player like Vandersloot for a reason, and will surely reap the rewards of her presence.
