Seemingly insignificant Lynx move could have major implications for Fever

The Minnesota Lynx have been active recently. They traded Diamond Miller for DiJonai Carrington, signed and later released Yvonne Anderson, and added Jaylyn Sherrod on a rest-of-the-season contract and Camryn Taylor on a seven-day contract.

Taylor, who was a part of the Lynx’s training camp roster, provides extra forward depth while Napheesa Collier is out with an injury. Sherrod gives them additional guard depth for the rest of the season.

Considering the Lynx’s established guard rotation of Courtney Williams, Kayla McBride, Natisha Hiedeman, and DiJonai Carrington, Sherrod likely won’t play much. So, signing her is not a huge deal for the Lynx, but it is a massive blow to the Fever.

The Fever have been playing without Caitlin Clark for a while. In her absence, backup point guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson ran the show. Both suffered season-ending injuries in the same game, leaving the Fever without a point guard. Jaylyn Sherrod would have been an interesting option for the Fever.

There aren’t many good point guards available right now

The Fever want to make the playoffs and go on a postseason run. To do that, they need a point guard who can deliver at that level. This late in the season, those players aren’t easy to find. The Fever already got lucky when they landed Aari McDonald earlier in the season.

Sherrod would have been an interesting option. While she didn’t play much during her rookie season in 2024, she was a part of the Liberty’s championship roster. She also impressed during her last two seasons of college basketball, averaging over ten points and five assists per game in both seasons.

With Sherrod on the Lynx’s roster now, the Fever have few options left. They could pick up Yvonne Anderson, who was just waived by the Lynx, Shey Peddy, Aerial Powers, Bree Hall, Zia Cooke, Serena Sundell, or Odyssey Sims. The latter would be the most proven and experienced option.

Injuries are starting to stack up

This WNBA season has been plagued by injuries. Several star players have already missed significant time. Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, and Rhyne Howard are all out at the moment. Ariel Atkins, Jonquel Jones, and the Mercury’s group of stars also all missed time due to injuries.

The expanded season is surely a factor. The WNBA added four games to each team’s season, going from 40 to 44, but squeezed those games into the same timeframe rather than creating more opportunities for players to rest. With the NBA and NCAA seasons starting in the fall, the WNBA is in a tricky position, but extending the season seems like the most logical solution to the injury trouble.
